Principals of Scaffolding
and Components

Course Description:

This course focuses on the specific requirements of various types of scaffolding. Students will review the OSHA standards and receive information in case file/investigation documentation procedures. The Scaffold Industry Association and manufacturers data will be discussed for proper scaffold erection methods. Participants will examine the Southern Pine inspection Bureau guidelines of Scaffold Grade Lumber as a guideline for compliance of wood planks. Key scaffolds reviewed are Tubular Welded Frame, Mobile, Swing Stage, Systems, Tube and Clamp, Pump Jack, Ladder Jack, Slip Form, Carpenters Bracket, Wood Pole, and Morgan.

Course Highlights:

  • Scaffold Models and Components are used for demonstrations.
  • Inspection equipment/instruments are demonstrated for use in safety surveys of scaffolds.
  • Each student will receive:
    • The Scaffold Industry Associations' Course Manual. Which includes the OSHA Scaffolding Standards, Manufacturers data, a picture description of each referenced scaffold in the OSHA and ANSI standards.
    • A course completion certificate.

Course Objectives:

Students should be able to:

  1. Recognize different types of scaffolds and perform a safety survey/inspection.
  2. Calculate Leg Loads, Platform Loads and Swing Stage Counterweight requirements.
  3. Use inspection/survey instruments for built-up scaffolds.
  4. Understand methods and requirements for guying, tying and bracing.
  5. Describe the duties of a competent person.
  6. Identify the proper OSHA standards for conditions observed.
  7. Understand the use of Fall Arrest Equipment while assembling, working on, and dismantling various types of scaffolds.
