Trenching, Excavation
and Shoring
Course Description:
This course
enables students to understand the OSHA general protection
requirements, soil analysis, and use of protective systems
such as sloping, wood shoring, aluminum, hydraulic shoring,
screw jacks, trench shields, and engineered protective
systems for trenches and excavations. Accident data
and statistics are discussed along with a review of
case file conditions.
Course
Highlights:

Hands-on
demonstrations of testing equipment such as the
torvane shear, penetrometer, sedimentation accouterments,
and depth/slope measuring devices.

Demonstration
of protective system models and soil samples.

Each
student will receive:
- Course manual,
which includes the OSHA Subpart P. letters of
interpretation, compliance directive CPL 2.87,
ASTM/unified/textural soils classification documents
and selected overheads.
- A course completion
certificate.
Course
Objectives:
Students should be
able to:

Understand
the definition, intent, and duties of a competent
person.

Perform
a soils analysis in accordance with the OSHA standards.

Understand
the characteristics, weight, and origin of soils.

Apply
the manufacturers tabulated data, engineered design
system, or the OSHA appendixes for compliance as
a protective system in a trench or excavation.
